    Fall in love with KaiserCartel

    by Matt Cuthbert
    Monday August 25, 2008, 2:23 PM

    KaiserCartel
Performing 8/26 at Bottletree. John P. Strohm opens. Tickets $7.
Once upon a time, Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel were living cushy lifestyles as elementary educators. But their lofty schoolteachers' salaries weren't enough for them. Overcome by corporate greed, they decided to ditch their careers, pack their stuff up in a car, and drive around the country playing wispy folk-pop songs late at night in dimly-lit music clubs under the moniker of KaiserCartel.

Seriously though, can you imagine what kind of devotion to music that sort of move takes (for any band)? To make their story even sweeter though, the two also became a couple.

Kathryn Tucker Windham's wit, insight revealed in photos

by James R. Nelson -- Birmingham News
    Sunday August 24, 2008, 3:06 AM

Encounters: Photographs By Kathryn Tucker Windham. Jennifer Hunt Gallery. Through Sept. 20.

Kathryn Tucker Windham's "Lady with Rooster," on exhibit at Jennifer Hunt Gallery, serves as a photographic essay of the Deep South.
Wisdom has many faces. The photographs of Kathryn Tucker Windham reflect a folksy wisdom in the studies she captures on film.

For those who saw Windham's recent exhibition at the Birmingham Museum of Art, this gallery show is something of a reprise. But it is also an expansion on her gentle insights of life in the Deep South. These visual essays span more than 60 years of observing family, friends, neighbors and occasionally strangers who move through her world.

Dining Review: Seafood Harbor a nice catch in McCalla

by Fletcher Harvey -- Birmingham News

Menu mostly keepers, but a little decorating in line

[Seafood Harbor, 4764 Eastern Valley Road, McCalla, 477-6001. ]

Ronnie England sits down to shrimp and pasta for lunch at Seafood Harbour in McCalla.
Filling a fish and shellfish void in dining choices for folks in western Jefferson County, Seafood Harbor has been open since May in a new shopping strip next to the Shoppes at Letson Farms in McCalla.

Be sure to take along a good appetite and perhaps bring a bit of atmosphere with you. The servings are generous; the decor, Spartan and sparse.

Menus are in a rack near the front door. Make your meal choices, order at the front counter and head for a table. While waiting for your plastic lobster to light up and vibrate, take a minute to look at -- nothing.

    by Chris Welch
    Wednesday August 27, 2008, 9:01 AM

It's that wonderful time of the year again.

And our Go: Your good Times magazine team decided to start the season off early by having a little football game at Milton Frank Stadium. There was a lot of illegal touching, but Chris Welch, Jon Busdeker, Steve "The Matador" Campbell, Victoria Cumbow, Christie Vail and Laci Pruitt turned a simple game into a fun afternoon.

Yep, it's time to kick off the college, pro and fantasy football seasons, and Go: Your good Times magazine is ready to kick things off, too.

We've got a page inside Thursday's edition on Fantasy Football 101 for those looking for more information or ways to jump into this fall phenomenon.

We also tell you the best places to watch college and pro games, and in many cases, draft your fantasy football teams.

Louisiana arts exec is new head of Cultural Alliance

    by Michael Huebner
    Monday August 25, 2008, 4:32 PM

Ralph S. "Buddy" Palmer will be the next Executive Director of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham.

The 51-year-old Selma native, who has directed similar organizations in Lafayette, La., and Selma, will replace Kathy Yarbrough, who left the post in October to join Alabama Symphony's administrative staff. Ann McMillan has served as interim director.

Palmer's strengths lie with community arts education programs.

"My mentors were artists who came of age in the 1960s, when art was about building neighborhoods and communities," he said from Lafayette, where he was preparing to move to Birmingham with his wife, Sarah. "My background is community-based art. It's that knowledge and background that I would like to bring to the organization."
